Laundry Day

Hello. It is 11:15 am on Saturday March 17. Kind of a dreary, windy and rainy day, a good day to do laundry.....which I know is not exciting but has to be done.

We left Pukekohe yesterday and headed to the Coromandel Peninsula via Route 25 and 25A. On the way we stopped on the coast at Pauanui to golf 18 holes at the Lakes Resort.

Again a beautiful area, very nice and scenic golf course surrounded by mountainous terrain. The hillsides were covered in pine trees so it was easy to imagine that we were in the Kananaskis area of Alberta.

They  were logging in the far hills, reminded me a lot of Vanouver Island but the hills adjacent to the course were untouched. Also a lot of nice homes on the course with easy access to the fairways. A fantastic retirement location one could say. Only downside, for us, are the winding and twisting mountain roads of NZ.
And this is my driver for the day

This is Shirley, our host at The Lakes Resort golf course

Large and spacious pro shop

Just like being in Canada
Pines in the background with tropical plants in the foreground

The path between 2 holes on the course. Notice the Maori totem poles along the path

I forgot to ask Shirley the significance of the Maori poles and arch but we have seen them before and I presume the area may be sacred ground to the Maori

You can see the logged off hillside way off in the distance

Couple of the many homes on the course

Again another very clean bathroom, washroom, toilet or loo or whatever people want to call it.

We both said "you gotta be kidding me!"when we saw the posted speed limit of 100km just before a hairpin turn, then we see the centre dotted line to allow passing! They did have "slow to....." signs before most corners but Naomi and I were usually a lot slower than that. It just meant that we both were pulling over lots to let the local fast and CRAZY drivers go by. I would have taken some shots when Naomi was driving but hard to do so when one is holding on tightly.  Naomi is winning the "Best Driver" competition....I got caught with the windshield wipers 3 times today to her 0.

Our next stop is at Baileys at the Beach in the seaside town of Whitianga. Our host here is Yvonne and again the room is perfect for our 2 night stay. It is very clean, and like all the previous places, it has cooking facilties and utensils all ready to go. The deck looks out to the beach just across the road.
No Vacancy. Seems to get busy here on the weekend. Most of the Inns and motels had the same signage up. People coming down from Auckland to get away for a few days I'm wondering

Our room is the middle one, 2nd floor

The view from our room. Wind is coming from offshore so the surf is up; you can't see them in the shot but there are a couple of surfers out there

So today is laundry day as I've said...Naomi is always telling me I repeat myself...may be some truth to that...hmmm.   We stopped in at the local grocery store to stock up on supplies and met Joseph who is very interested in visiting Canada.  He had many questions about Canada. I told him to come in our summer time and I think we may see him some time...he was very enthusiastic and said he just loves Canadians!  His co-workers were giving him a hard time when he wasn't there because his cart was left in the produce department and he was nowhere to be seen.  Naomi set them straight sharing he was back cutting the watermelon that Naomi selected for another client.  Joseph let her know the watermelon was perfect...score one for the Canadian Watermelon Picking team!

That's about it for now.  This has been our first relaxing (read a book), do nothing kind of day.  It was very nice to sleep in and not be rushing off to do / see something...may regret we missed seeing some attractions later but not today!   The down time has been nice.

We plan on stopping at Cathedral Cove and Hot Beach tomorrow as we head back down the coast towards the Taupo area.

Goodbye for now
