Hot Rodding in Paihia

Hello again from Paihai. It is Friday, March 9 at 4:10 pm. Had a great day today but first we have to get caught from the previous 2 days.

As per previous blog for Wednesday, March 7 we stopped at the Brick Bay Winery and sculpture trail. There were 67 different sculptures throughout the property and yes, I thought some left me scratching my head and saying...really..."people would actually pay money for this" but some were very interesting and well done. The least expensive piece started at $500, part of a 3 piece series, and most were $10,000 + plus range with the most expensive at $92,500 (anyone guess yet?, I can disclose which one in a future blog).

Each piece has the artists interpretation of what he was trying to represent so I included a shot of the pamphlet but you may need a magnifying glass to read.

Now moving forward to yesterday, Thursday March 8. We got up headed out to have breakfast at one of the many roadside cafes that stretch along the waterfront. We bought tickets for 2 tours, one for today ( Mar 9th) and the other was an hour long local tour on the neatest "ride" you can imagine - we did this on Mar 8th.

Dwayne Sluggett, we have found the perfect semi-retirement gig for you! Taking tourists around Sylvan Lake in style:

Thunder Trike Tour - custom built V8 Chev Trike.
Here you go Mark. A bit of PR for you

First thing Naomi did was ask if she could drive and owner Mark just pointed to the license plate...Yes it's fast and no you can't drive it.

The Queen is waiting...!

We are ready to roll!

Incredible get up and go in this thing!

Naomi may try to claim that we ditched driver Mark and we're about to blast off ...nope, he is the one taking the picture...but I do believe he took the keys out of the ignition...just in case

Roads were awesome, narrow, windy...just like a good BC road so a blast.

For sure this would work in Sylvan Lake!  Everyone we passed was either waving or smiling with a big grin...what a dream job is what I'm saying Dwayne.

One of the views from up near the golf course that we will play Saturday
Mark says this trike is considered a convertible auto, not a bike, so no helmets required.  When we reached 100 km per hour and screaming around some tight turns Naomi asked the helmet question...it was all good and Mark was an excellent driver.  A fellow in Christchurch builds them using, in this case, a small block Chevy motor with auto transmission and a Ford (I think) rear end.

The builder hopes to start exporting them, only cost about $120,000NZ.

After our Thunder Tour we walked around town to see points of interest like historical buildings and this one huge tree, similar to our Douglas Firs.

This is a VERY big tree. I had Naomi pose beside it and I will post that shot shortly but first some other area shots

A Farmers market behind us.

Starting point for our bike tour...everyione wanted to take a ride after they saw and heard us rumbling down the road.

The Bay side road - all hotels / motels must have underground parking.

Has that small seaside village charm to it

Ok, now for the comparison shot of Naomi and that monster tree.

It's like find Waldo....find Naomi.

Now for some shots of plants that you will never see in any Garage Granny's garden.

Things are not going well with Naomi's Mom Norma.  Quentin and sister-in-law Deb are keeping her posted via e-mail but she is on our minds alot.

To Lea and Anne - drop Naomi an e-mail at naomi.mccully@gmail.com.  I did not put your e-mails into my tablet so can't connect one on one until I get your addresses....thx.  Missing you both :)

Ok that's all for now. I have to load today's pictures into the tablet but first I plan on beating Naomi at Crib.
Bye for now
