Naomi's big hair event day...sort of

Hello again. It is Wed Feb 21 and today's news is Naomi got her braids taken out. Now she s off to Signatoka to get her split ends cut off. She was threatening to come back with a crew cut and I just say "yes my love"

I asked for hair extensions and they said they did not have enough glue! How rude! Just joking.

Today I had an inservice on all the uses they have for coconut. In the past they relied on this nut for so many things from using it as a food source to make clothing and even used to provide shelter.

Usually the ripened nut will fall on it's own, which could mean getting "cocobonked" if one is not careful. They also will climb the trees to knock down the green ones. That's why they will cut notches into some of the trunks to aid in climbing. Getting the nut onto the ground is the first hurdle, now how do they open It?

Using a sharp stick embedded into the ground they pound the coconut onto the spike and remove the outer husk. Next they open up the inside in a special way which splits the nut in half. The juice is usually thrown out and the white meat is ground out using this real slick stool setup.

The white meat is then squeezed to provide the coconut milk. One half of the nut shell is cleaned out to become the next Kava drinking cup.

The outer husk can also be used to make a very strong rope; they braid the strips of husk together as one would braid Naomi's hair.

Also used extensively is the banana leaf, they use it to make all kinds of containers, from food storage to making fish traps and baskets. This fronds weaver said it just doing hair into a French Braid.

Quick note: Fellow diver Kevin from our Chuuk adventure sent us some underwater pics that he took so I want to throw in this one of Naomi.

That is not the bottom below her, it is the hull with the ship lying on it's side at about 80 ft.

Also have to add a pic of me and Lese demonstrating his SPPM (Specialized Personal People Mover) He did say that it works better than his wheelbarrow for moving larger and inebriated tourists back to their rooms!

Bob appears quite comfortable with this mode of transport!

Goodbye for now!
