ASIA - Here We Come

Never thought we would get to say that we are heading off on another great adventure,  but Feb 2020 - ASIA here we come!!  We will visit Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand for roughly 2 months.  Stayed tuned as we share our experiences like cruising the Mekong Delta and hopefully diving with the Whale Sharks off the coast of Phuket, Thailand.  Lots of adventure awaits!!!

Hello again. This blog has been waiting to finish for the last 7 months. I have been waiting to download our Bull Shark dive on YouTube using a thumb drive. I have since given up on that project. If anyone interested just Google Bull Shark dive, Beqa Island, Fiji. Also the Internet is full of pictures of diving Truk Lagoon and the live-aboard dive boat, the Odyssey.  Our next and last stop on our trip is Maui. We arrived at the airport around noon and picked up our rental car and made our way out to Kannapali Shores to our hotel. Here are a few shots of the area from the balcony in front of the hotel.  The car rental agency really tried to push their convertible Mustangs or their Jeeps but the roads on Maui were too full of traffic or too windy with hairpin turns and no shoulders to pull over on. The Wrecks of Truk

 It is now 0400 hrs on Feb 5 in the Singapore Airport and we are waiting for our next leg to Sydney Australia. Travel Hint: Avoid Manila airport if you can! It is very busy and once inside the Departure terminal there is no place to get food or drink. We found a place to sit and we sat there for almost 12 hours! Now stepping back a bit to Chuuk Lagoon. The area was controlled by different nations over the years. When Germany had the area pre WW1 they could not pronounce the "chook" sound so they started calling it "truck" lagoon and the name stuck until after WW2 when the territory became under the control of the US. During WW2 the Japanese used the lagoon anchorage for their South Pacific combined fleet. They had built a submarine base and a seaplane base, which incidently, is where we stayed at; the Blue Lagoon Resort. You can still see some old concrete structures on the beach and grounds. Cambodia Killing Fields

Disclaimer - the following pictures are very graphic.  This was the toughest day, March 4th,  during our whole trip...very emotionally draining.  We live such a sheltered life in Canada...we really need to appreciate our lives and lifestyle. We will start the day with a visit to Tuol Sleng prison, or S-21, which was initially a school complex in the city of Phnom Penh. It became the main interrogation center of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge (KR) were a radical communist militia in Cambodia in the 70's and on April 17, 1975 just 2 weeks before the fall of Saigon they marched into Phnom Penh and the terror started. Their goal was to turn the country into a pure, self sufficient rural peasant society. To do that they had to rid the country of its urban and educated members of society.
