Kauai

Hello again. For the next blog we have left Oahu and travelled to Kauai on Wednesday, March 28. The flight was under 2 hours and the airport was a lot smaller and a whole lot less crowded then in Oahu.

We stayed at the Kauai Marriott Resort near the airport on the 8th floor of one of the hotel towers. The resort had a great protected beach plus a great pool with 5 separate hot tubs.
Our hotel lobby with replicas of original surfboards and outrigger canoe

The polished wood is just beautiful

Look Brad! I found another fish pond!

Another great looking fish pond
They feed these Koi every morning at 9 am. Many will feed right out of your hand

More of the Koi fish pond down by the lobby

The beach is in a protected bay and every morning you can see the early am "board meetings" (surf boards that is) out in the bay. We did have a great view of the resort and of the bay from our balcony (lanai).
Our room is up on the top right, 2 floors down and third balcony in

Those round rotundas are the hot tubs, 5 of them

Now the view from the our lanai

The sun going down on our resort
Going out for dinner the first night
The resort had a few of these gas fireplaces on the grounds. I was patiently waiting for them to bring out the meat to BBQ......but to no avail...darn.

For us it was a chance to relax and spend time poolside instead of travelling all over the place on tours. We did do some driving about when the weather was not conducive to sun tanning and we did have a great golf game on one cloudy morning.

Our first road trip took us up the east side of the island along the coast. On the way we went through small seaside towns and passed by many beaches where the surfers hang out. There were many coastal stretches of rocky shore as well.

This spot is called the Blow Hole. It does get more active with the higher surf and tide

Had to show this, graffiti on these tree leaves!

Every beach usually had someone on it.

We did drive off the main road down to the coast and from this viewpoint you can see the Humpback whales in the distance.

Vegetation growing across the road

Incredibly lush and green growth on Kauai; it also has the 8th wettest spot on the planet based on annual rainfall

The further up The coast we went the narrower and twisted the roads became; even encountering one way bridges again...shades of NZ

Even though it was cloudy all the beaches had people on them and parking was hard to find. We met one fellow who was taking a surf break from work. This unique surfboard is gaining popularity and is weird to see the surfers ride the waves above the water. Now they do have these motorized boards on the market....check YouTube

Notice the sign? Anyone remember the song "Puff the Magic Dragon" from the "Land of Hanalei"...well, this is it. I always thought it was "HoneyLee"!

Taro fields in the distance

This guy came up and had a visit with us....they were everywhere we went running wild.

This beautiful but sometimes violent coastline has claimed many lives over the years

On our return to the resort we see 2 cruise ships in the harbor.
We also did a road trip up the West side of the island to what the locals call Kauai's "Grand Canyon". The actual name is Waimea Canyon State Park and that will be the topic of our next blog.
Bye for now
